Masaan Version Full Movies Awards: A List of the Honors and Nominations Received by the Film

In a special diving competition, Pathak bets Rs 10000, a significant portion of his remaining savings, on Jhonta. Jhonta drowns and is taken to a hospital by Vidyadhar, who vows to never let the boy participate in the diving competition again. As Jhonta regains consciousness, he is shown to have found Shaalu's ring, which had been thrown into the Ganga by Deepak in a fit of grief. Jhonta gives it to Vidyadhar, who sells the ring to fully pay off Inspector Mishra.

Senior journalist Shekhar Gupta wrote in his National Interest column that Masaan left a deep impression on him, "get[ting] the pulse of small-town India as no other I have seen."[26] The director has woven Ganga intimately into Varun Grover's tight screenplay, Gayatri Gauri wrote in First Post adding "Several crucial moments swirl around the Ganga, beautifully shot without succumbing to visual exotica, and after you leave the cinema, they linger in your memory, like the flames dying slowly in the cremation grounds where so much of Masaan unfurls."[27]

There are a few awkward patches and the pacing dips in places. Some might also find the ending too pat; the various threads come together a little too neatly. But by then I was so devastated that I needed comfort. Thankfully, Neeraj leaves us with a smidgen of solace and hope.

Varun Grover's story is the kind of companion to Neeraj Ghaywan's direction that can only be dreamt of. Replete with moments of both joy and sorrow, Masaan is a beautifully balanced film. For a moral dilemma-ridden Vidyadhar's sermons, there is the little Jhonta's unembellished retorts. For Shaalu's eagerness to visit Deepak's home, there is the latter's outburst. For a sorrow-filled tale, there is the hope of picking the pieces up and moving on.When the bodies are brought to the ghat for cremation, you can feel the heat of the pyre. The serenity of the Ganga under the moon seeps into your soul. Avinash Arun's camera captures the grey smoke from the corpses with as much expertise as it does a boy gifting an awkwardly-wrapped 'bhaalu' to a potential girlfriend on the street. By the end of Masaan, Varanasi is a living, breathing creature within you.

A story about a woman from a small-town, lower middle class family inadvertently getting into a soup with the cops is hardly new. But, it looks like this one has a take that is different from the norm of her giving it back full throttle. I'm hoping for an experience that won't be novel but will stay with me for a while after I am out of the theater. Then again, that is always my hope.
