That evening, they had instructed us to change into our black attire, and return to the meeting area. This was the start of the spiritual aspect of joining the sorority because the vows, oaths, and worship of aka begins. The room was dark, the grad members were dressed in black, some were in white (I will explain why in a few) and there were a few candles illuminating the room so that the things being read over us could be seen by them. During one portion of intake where the degrees were being read over us, I heard the Holy Spirit say, "You need to leave now!" and I tried justifying my reasons to the Lord why I should stick around. My mind didn't want to run but my feet did. This was a major mistake on my part because spiritually I was sensing that things weren't right with this whole process. One of the girls kept fainting throughout the weekend and I believe that was the Lord's way of trying to prevent her from going further in the process. They instructed us to lock hands while entering one of the dark rooms and began to read obscure readings over us which said "life is like a winding maze, a labyrinth through which you'll wander all of your days"...the women who were dressed in white were staggered as pillars throughout this phase. This is part of the joining of souls and these words are a curse spoken over each pledgee. One day, a couple of the girls and I were having a discussion after a committee meeting. As everyone expressed their feelings about the pledge process and the fear we all experienced, I blurted out, "maybe we signed our names in the book of death?" (theres a part of the intake process where you sign your name in a book while kneeling and bowing in submission to the god of aka and their doctrine).
